What is Portmanteau?

That’s the hook for this 2-lesson packet. Is it just a fun word to say? Actually, it’s 2 words mixed together to make a new, fun word!

Using portmanteau to get my students thinking is one of the most fun lessons I teach. I start by putting the word on the board with a few examples and ask them if they can decipher what portmanteau is!

Lesson One focuses on the concept of portmanteau, creating portmanteau words, and collaborative learning through a Thinking Classroom setting.

I have included examples of my whiteboard for the beginning of this lesson.

Lesson two focuses on critical thinking, creative writing, and the application of the newly learned content.

This packet includes all the graphic organizers and handouts you’ll need including 2 mentor texts for the lessons.

You don’t even need to create your own grading paper to hand back to students when they’re done. A rubric and hand back grading page are also included!
